‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD – and I must say only what the LORD says.’ (v13) Numbers 24:1–14
The story of Balaam is normally remembered because his donkey spoke. However, it’s really a story of speaking truth to power. Balaam had to choose between God and himself.
King Balak promised him great rewards if he did as he was ordered. Indeed, it appears Balaam had a reputation for divination, seeking knowledge about the future by supernatural means, something condemned by God who alone holds the future in His hands.
God always invites us to consider our long-term happiness; sin entices us with immediate, apparent, satisfaction. God intends to establish consistency in our life and witness through obedience.
Balaam had his pride dented when God needed to speak to him through his donkey. But this was an act of God’s love, a reminder to open his eyes and remain true to God’s word.
Our great challenge is to become increasingly sensitive to how God invites us to live our lives. In the face of opportunity are we able to discern His voice and obey His direction? Where our heart is willing, He will place prompts along our path to remind and encourage us in His direction.

An Action to Take: Life demands that we take decisions. Those decisions, and the fruit from them, will reveal who we obey. Does your decision making include God? Our reward may not be immediate contentment.
A Prayer to Make: ‘Lord, I want to hear and obey Your voice and take my stand on the truth of Your Word. Amen.’
