‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.’ (v14) John 1:10–18
The wonder of the incarnation, or the appearance of God in the flesh, is remarkable. Despite disobeying God, what we call sin, our heavenly Father chose to come and live amongst us to reveal who God is and how we are to enter into fullness of life (John 10:10).
God’s glory, clothed in flesh, walked this earth, so that the full face and glory of God was veiled from human sight. No one can see the face of God and live (Exod. 33:20). However, following Christ’s passion and resurrection, we are invited to gaze on God’s full self-disclosure in Scripture.
This contains the fulfilment of all the Law and the Prophets and offers us the opportunity to discover how we are to live at rest with God, ourselves, our neighbour and our life context. This is the fullest expression of the Sabbath rest that Jesus invites us to enter with Him (Heb. 4:6–11).
So, God’s Word offers us the opportunity to find the purpose for which we are created, the means to discover self-worth, security and significance. These three characteristics largely determine our words, our reactions and our life’s direction. They were designed by God to draw us into a deeper relationship with, and understanding of Him and of ourselves.
