‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.’ (vv1–2) John 1:1–9
Strikingly, God’s Word preceded all of creation, for God’s Word is Jesus, the foundation for all that is. Ultimately, creation is sustained by God’s Word alone (Col. 1:15–17).
God created all things through the spoken word, ‘And God said…’ (Gen. 1:3) and, through the incarnation, the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). His name is Jesus, the full expression of God revealed in history.
Following His resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven and now intercedes at the right hand of the Father (Acts 2:33; 7:55–56; Heb. 7:25). Today we encounter the living Word, Jesus, every time we read the Scriptures. It is why they are foundational to our life as disciples, or learners of God’s way.
Whenever you look into the Bible, you are actually gazing on Jesus, God’s living Word. So, no matter how familiar a passage may sound, God is waiting to engage us in a fresh encounter with Himself.
Each meeting is to strengthen our confidence in God, deepen our understanding of God and equip us to live more effectively for God. It is with excitement that I pick up and read my Bible every day; I am going to catch up with my best and most trustworthy friend.
