Genesis 40:6–23 ‘The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.’ (v23)
Hopes are raised for Joseph once more. After some time in prison forgotten by all, and yet not by God – for remember God is showing kindness to Joseph – Joseph sees a possible way out. He asks the cupbearer to remember him to Pharaoh. However, once again we see Joseph’s hopes dashed as the call does not come for his release and it becomes apparent that the cupbearer has not remembered him.
The situation looks desperate, but still we find no complaint from Joseph. Sometimes our pain can seem to go on forever, but everything does have a season. After winter comes spring, with its promise of new life. At this point in the story, it is still winter for Joseph, and the hope of spring feels a long way off.
Patience is required, for Joseph cannot yet see what God is doing. It takes faith to keep trusting in the dark times when the season seems endless. Take refuge in the Lord, o weary soul, for He sees and knows your plight, and is doing a work in your heart. He is a faithful God.
A Prayer to Make:
‘Thank you, God that no season lasts forever. Help me to understand deep in my heart that You are at work even in the dark times. Amen.’
An Action to Take:
Ask God to show you how He has sustained you in the tough times, and remember His faithfulness.
