Matthew 13:44–46 ‘When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.’ (v46)
The parable of the fine pearl seems very similar to the treasure hidden in the field in verse 44. Why is Jesus repeating Himself? But there is a contrast. With the treasure in the field the implication is that the man comes across the treasure.
But in this parable the merchant is looking for pearls and finds a beauty and, like the treasure finder, also sells everything he has to buy it. Jesus seems to be contrasting those who, as it were, stumble across the Christian faith with those who may actively seek something more and discover the kingdom of heaven is just what they wanted.
It is also true that Christians themselves find that there is a deeper reality to their faith than expected, perhaps because they reach a point in their life where they were hungry for more and God graciously meets them.
The truth is that this side of heaven, there is always more! God has more to show you and seasons of life still to come where He will prove Himself to you.
Jesus wonderfully promises that if we are thirsty we can come to Him and drink (John 7:37). So, we can seek Him right where we are, and look to Him to provide the Pearl of the Kingdom of heaven today.

Next time you engage with the Bible in the company of God’s people, why not ask God to show you the value of His kingdom afresh.
