Genesis 12:1–3 ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.’ (v1)

Introduced at the end of chapter 11, Abram’s move to the land of Canaan is outlined at the start of chapter 12. This is seen as a key turning point in the book of Genesis, and indeed in the whole of Scripture. This extraordinary call is given little detail as to how exactly the conversation came about.

Abram is told to leave his country, people and his father’s household to go to a land he would be shown. The conversation stands as a symbol for Christians throughout history who have obeyed God’s word and left what they know to do something new and fresh because God is calling them to.

Our issue with any new venture of course is that we know how we feel about the present: and even if that is not totally pleasant, it is what we know and can rely on. The future by its very nature is uncertain and unreliable.

All we have to go on is what we believe God is calling us to do. Very few have a vision or angel, but instead perhaps the still small voice of God, advice from friends, a verse of Scripture that seems to be repeated or a dream that God is giving us which won’t go away.

But thankfully God always keeps His word. No promise in Scripture that is given without conditions has ever failed to be completed. He’s not about to start now and so whatever He is saying to you, you can trust it.

A Prayer To Make:
‘Lord, thank You for the example of Abram. Help me to be faithful in following Your Word too. Amen.’

An Action To Take:
If you know what God is calling you to do or has told you to do – it’s time to do it!

Scripture To Consider:
Ps. 32; Isa. 30:15–22; John 10:1–18; Col. 1:9–14
