John 6:1–15 ‘Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.’ (v12)

In the famous story of the feeding of thousands of men, women and children, we see how a small amount of food went a long way in Jesus’ hands!

The disciples are concerned about feeding so many people, and all they have is two fish and some barley loaves – a boy’s lunch (v9).

In effect, it would be like trying to feed thousands with a couple of sardine sandwiches! We can only image the disciples’ perplexity.

But of course, Jesus isn’t fazed. Before he breaks the loaves, He gives thanks; it’s a good picture of giving a problem to God, to whom nothing is impossible!

The fish and bread are miraculously multiplied. Everyone is satisfied. But today, let’s look at that intriguing comment by Jesus found in verse 12.

Don’t let anything be wasted. Sometimes we can think our efforts for the gospel’s sake seem to amount to very little, especially if we have been involved in some sort of evangelism.

Or perhaps we are living through difficult life circumstances and simply cannot see how God could ever bring good out of them.

‘Why, Lord? Why did this happen? How can You possibly bring something out of this situation that can be used for good, and for Your glory?’

We may not see it now, and we may never see it during our lifetimes, but the fact is, nothing is wasted in God’s economy.

He can redeem and restore in ways we may not understand. Hopefully that will encourage us when we view the ‘leftovers’ in our lives and wonder how God can use them. He is able. Let’s trust Him!

A Prayer To Make:
‘Father, help me to trust You with the things I don’t understand. I believe You are good and loving, and You care for me and those around me. Increase my faith, I pray.’

An Action To Take:
Review the ‘leftovers’ in your life. Can you surrender them to God? If it helps, write them down, put them in an envelope and imagine yourself giving God the letter.

Scripture To Consider:
Gen. 50:15–21; Job 23:1–12; John 11:17–44; Rom. 8:18–39
