1 Kings 8:22–30 ‘But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens… cannot contain you.’ (v27)
After God appears as a cloud covering the Temple, we see Solomon’s response. He can’t help but express his wonder at the fact that God, who dwells in the heavens, would yet come and grace the Temple with His presence.
Solomon’s question is one that remains pertinent today: ‘But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you’ (v27).
When we consider the cries of the Israelites, petitioning God to come and live with them, we can be all the more amazed that our Father would send His Son to become a man and make His home with us.
And that after His death, we can receive His Spirit to be with us at all times. Why not take some time to pray through Solomon’s prayer?
Note how he starts off by naming the attributes of God – that He is holy and unique, and that He keeps His promises. Which qualities of God stand out to you?
Spend some time naming them. Then note how Solomon moves into petition, asking God to extend the number of descendants as He previously promised.
What issues or people weigh strongly on your heart, which you can give to God? As you list them, give thanks that God keeps His promises.
Then Solomon turns to his musings about the limitless God who chooses to limit Himself by dwelling on earth. Ponder the gift we have of Jesus – the Man who is God. We have the gift of His presence each day, if we but welcome Him into our lives.
A Prayer To Make:
‘Lord God, You really do dwell with me. Thank You for Your loving presence, whether or not I feel it. Amen.’
An Action To Take:
Write out a statement that God is with you, such as ‘I am with you always’, and put it on your phone or a sticky note to remind yourself of its truth today.
