God

Paul has an opportunity to speak to the people and, although Luke doubtless gives just a summary of what he said, it is interesting that Paul communicates in a way appropriate for people with little or no grasp of the Scriptures that Paul has been schooled in.

He references God, not at the this moment as a ‘saviour’ but as a creator and provider of life, attributing their enjoyment of food and life (joy) to Him.

Given the opportunity we know that Paul would preach ‘Christ and him crucified’ (1 Cor. 2:2), but that’s not his starting point.

His tone is to start with what they would be likely to agree on – an approach he also used elsewhere (Acts 17:24).

The Bible is precious to the believer, but may not be our starting point when talking to people who know little of the faith.

Everyone lives as image bearers in God’s world, and part of our role in sharing our faith is helping people to be open to the possibility that what they enjoy of the wonder of life comes from a creator who has so much more for them.

What theologians call ‘common grace’ is enjoyed by everyone. With some sad exceptions, and aware of the particular challenges some face, life is good for many.

Many imbibe the atheistic mindsets of the culture, and presume that science can explain all that truly matters.

But how lovely to introduce people to a personal God who made them and looks to enjoy a close fellowship with them, which will open up fresh possibilities and adventures as they follow Jesus.

A Prayer To Make:
Thank You, Lord, for all that You send and all that I know of joy. It comes from You and I am grateful. Amen.

An Action To Take:
Think of non-believers you know. Might there be some things they enjoy that could be a conversation starter?

Scripture To Consider:
Ps. 8:1–9; Jer. 32:16–25; Acts 17:16–34; 1 Pet. 3:13–22
