Engineering

Did you know pursuing an engineering career is also a way to fulfil God’s purposes? As an aspiring engineer or a seasoned professional, there are countless opportunities to make a significant impact!

I’ve felt this sense of purpose in my work, knowing that my efforts contribute to the greater good.

What Do Engineers Do?

Engineering is dedicated to improving the quality of life. You learn to leverage technology and resources to meet human needs and address challenges.

So, engineers are problem solvers, innovators, and creators. They work across industries to develop solutions to enhance effectiveness, functionality, and safety.

It’s Not Easy

However, despite its noble goals, engineering involves rigorous problem-solving, long hours and high stress that can be quite demanding. Further, the need to stay updated with rapidly evolving technologies can also be overwhelming, leading to burnout for some professionals.

I’ve seen friends and colleagues face these challenges, and it’s not always an easy path. Yet, there is a profound and motivating aspect to engineering that often goes unrecognised: it can be seen as God’s calling.

The Technological Mandate In Genesis

Engineering can be seen as God’s calling because it aligns with the technological mandate found in Genesis. The creation mandate includes two main directives: procreation and utilising the material world’s resources to advance human progress and God’s purposes.

Genesis 1:28 Records God’s Command To Humanity. “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.” Additionally, God tasked Adam with naming all the animals in the Garden of Eden.

Humanity, as God’s representative or vice-regent, is entrusted with the responsibility of reigning with and for Him.

Common Grace

Timothy R. Tuinstra emphasises that the engineering profession is fundamentally about improving the human condition and responsibly using resources to benefit society. Engineering, often synonymous with technology, plays a crucial role in this mission.

Medical technology advancements exemplify this calling. I’ve always been fascinated by how devices like CT scanners, developed by engineers, can save lives and improve health.

Engineers have developed tools that enable us to identify diseases and solve problems previously hidden, significantly improving quality of life. Devices such as the CT scanner showcase God’s common grace through the engineering profession, prolonging lives and enhancing health.

Embracing God’s Calling

In essence, when individuals pursue careers in engineering, they are fulfilling God’s command to love their neighbours. By harnessing technology to serve humanity, engineers embody obedience to divine directives, aligning their work with a higher calling.

Conclusion

Engineering is a divine calling. If you feel inspired by this vision, consider how your skills and talents can contribute to the betterment of humanity.  Despite the challenges, embrace the journey and make a positive difference in the world.  Let’s make our world a better place together.
