Read Luke 9:28–36
‘About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendour, talking with Jesus.’ (vv28–30)
In our reading today, we see Jesus inviting Peter, James and John into His ‘come and be with me’ space.
As the fulfilment of the law and the prophets, Moses and Elijah appeared alongside Jesus, where Jesus was suddenly transformed so that ‘his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning’ (v29).
Such was the experience that Peter wanted to remain in this ‘space’ (v33).
Whilst there were many who preferred to stay in the crowd and simply seek blessing, be that healing or other – others, like Peter, James and John wanted to spend time with Jesus – allowing His words and actions to shape them.
This model of discipleship, of following, is something for God’s people to emulate today – not only as we seek to ‘be with Jesus’ everyday ourselves – but as we seek to pass on to others what it means to follow Him.
As those called to make disciples, if we allow people to walk alongside us in our daily lives, this allows us to show what following Jesus looks like in the ‘everyday’.
This could be called our ‘come and be with me’ space, as we allow people to be up close and personal, seeing how we handle various situations, and our passion for prayer and Scripture.
It can be easy for us to keep people at a distance, but it is in the more intimate spaces that we can start to encourage people into a deeper walk with Christ.
A PRAYER TO MAKE:
‘Lord Jesus, help me to make myself vulnerable and open up my life to help others love and follow You. Amen.’
AN ACTION TO TAKE:
Think about your ‘come and be with me’ space. Who are the ‘three’ that the Lord may have placed in your life, those you might spend more time with, demonstrating what following and loving Jesus looks like?
