Read Colossians 1:15–20
‘The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.’ (vv15–16)
As we celebrate Christmas, it can be easy to simply see Jesus as ‘baby Jesus’, a helpless babe. Yet in Paul’s letter to the Colossian church, he gives us an awe-inspiring picture of just who Jesus is.
Paul describes Jesus as the very image and reality of God Himself (v15), the One over all creation (v15).
Writing to a church who knew God was the great Creator, Paul describes the divine Jesus as ‘over all creation’ (v15), with all things subject to Him (v16).
Indeed, Paul goes on to describe Jesus as the very centre of the universe, the One who holds all things together (v17), One who also leads His Church in resurrection power (v18).
Not to leave them in any doubt as to Jesus’ identity, Paul reminds them again of His divine nature, with God’s fullness ‘pleased… to dwell in Him’.
Ultimately, Jesus is the One who has made peace with God possible – all through His blood shed on the cross.
Next time we gaze at a nativity scene, if we are tempted to view Jesus simply as a helpless baby, let us be reminded that He is the supreme Son, in whom the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and who has made peace with God a reality for all of those who would acknowledge the cross and bow the knee to Him as Lord.
