Colossians 2:16–19 ‘Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you.’ (v18)
Teachers and lecturers, especially when rooted in Christ, are often gracious as they teach, sharing their wisdom.
They exude humility as they weave together the nuggets of understanding proffered by those who learn from them – those who in their youth might wear their arrogance as a shield.
But true wisdom never puffs one up. Paul points out the fallacy of those who are ‘puffed up with idle notions’ (v18); they who have been hoodwinked into false beliefs as they move away from the triune God.
He wants the Colossians not to fall prey to those who want them to add rituals and rules to their faith.
We aren’t sure exactly what the prophets taught, but many scholars believe those at Colossae were being enticed by a mixture of pagan, Jewish and Christian beliefs.
Paul wants them to return to the wisdom and sufficiency of Christ, for He does not demand that they engage in a series of empty festivals or rules.
Have we succumbed to a modern mixture of beliefs, perhaps without much consideration? Where are we filled with false pride over the correctness of our beliefs in contrast to those of our fellow believers?
We all have blind spots, and this is where we need our sisters and brothers in Christ to show us what we’re missing – gently but firmly. May we be filled with true humility as we grow in knowledge and wisdom.
