40 Hebrew Words for Forty Days - Day 16
The Hebrew word שָׁלוֹם (shalom) has wide range of meaning. Basically, it includes the idea of ‘wholeness/completeness, welfare, prosperity, security and peace’ – signifying a sense of well-being and harmony both within and without.
Therefore, sometimes it is simply a form of greetings [ שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם (shalom alechem: ‘peace be upon you’)], but more often it describes relationships – individual to individual, nation to nation or God to humans.
Moreover, it is depicted as equivalent to prosperity – in material sense – a gift from God and withdrawal of God’s peace is viewed as a curse. Jesus Christ, the greatest peacemaker, invites us to pass on this holistic peace to the world which is longing for shalom.
