40 Hebrew Words for Forty Days - Day 27

The Hebrew verb כָּהַן (kahan) refers to the functions performed by the Old Testament priests, from which the noun כֹּהֵן (kohen: priest) was derived.

The priests were basically ‘mediators between God and people’ and their office include guarding the sanctuary, dispensing oracles, performing cultic duties, teaching law, etc. They were led by ‘the high priest’ הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל‎ (hakkohen haggadol);

Aaron was the first high priest. Jesus is our ‘great high priest,’ superior to the OT high priest since he offered himself as the final sacrifice for our sins.

Being seated at the right hand of the Father, he mediates/intercedes for us. In the midst of COVID 19, as priesthood of all believers, let us stand between God and our nation to intercede.
