40 Hebrew Words for Forty Days - Day 7
The Hebrew word אוׄר (’or) as a noun means ‘light, brightness, daylight and as a verb, it means to be or become light, and to illuminate. It appears for the first time in the creation story where God says – ‘Let there be light’ – in the chaos of darkness (Gen. 1:3).
To bring light is to bring order to something which appears chaotic. Therefore, light is a symbol of good and beautiful, of all that is positive.
Moreover, in a concrete sense the verbal form of אוׄר (’or) means enlightenment. God is the source of light (and life) who enlightens us in order to illuminate His attributes and to bring order and transformation in individual lives and society.
