‘Moses did everything just as the LORD commanded him.’ (v16) Exodus 40:16–33

Eight times it’s written that Moses did as the Lord commanded. God is interested in detail, not just the big picture. We easily ignore ‘incidental’ steps, and assume we’re obeying God.

In Revelation, God challenged six of seven churches with the fatal flaw that quenched the Spirit, raising questions about their faithfulness. As disciples, we are filled with God’s Spirit. We are vehicles through whom God exposes and contests evil in society.

Our lives offer a critical window through which people can gaze upon the kingdom of God. In light of this, do we have flaws to address?

The risen Jesus stands and intercedes beside His Father for the gospel to be made visible through the lives of His people. The angel declares to each of the seven churches in Revelation, ‘Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches’ (Rev. 3:22), a phrase found on Jesus’ lips also (Matt. 11:15).

We don’t require an angel to mobilize our faith. We have the witness and ministry of Jesus; we have God’s carefully spoken Word; we enjoy access to God’s throne of grace. It’s about how we choose to live, and it’s the minutiae of our lives that God is interested in.

It’s what’s perhaps invisible to family and friends and too easily brushed aside by us, yet studied by God. It’s often said that the devil is in the detail, and that is something to seriously consider in our Christian lives.

Related Scripture to Consider: Rev. 2–3; Josh. 7:1–12; Mark 4:9; Heb. 4:8–16.

An Action to Take: Carry out a swift audit of your life, especially what might count as the minutiae, and ask yourself: am I living in every way as the Lord commands me to?

A Prayer to Make: ‘Lord, you know my deeds, my hard work and my perseverance. Reveal anything where I am resisting You, so that I may be a window into Your kingdom through my life. Amen.’
