‘All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.’ (v16) 2 Timothy 3:10–17

One thing remains true: the Word of God is central to how we encounter God and live the Christian life. Paul declares that Scripture is ‘God-breathed (Gen. 2:7). The same breath gave life to the first mortals, who were shaped by God, and also informed the many who contributed to the Scriptures we study so carefully today.

Scripture remains the source of informed, life-giving counsel by which we order our ways in every sphere of life. This is why we take them so seriously. They lay the foundations that encourage us all to live every day with Jesus.

There is no alternate source for God’s truth. Hence, we handle it carefully. We can also approach Scripture in a number of different ways, and each of us might have a preference in how we engage with it, but let us recognise that God speaks in many and various ways (Heb. 1:1).

The baseline is this: if we want to encounter God, then it is to the Bible we turn. This is the book of life in which we can encounter Jesus, Himself described as the Word of life.

RELATED SCRIPTURE TO CONSIDER: Josh. 1:7–9; Psa. 119:9–16; John 1:1–5; 1 John 1:1–4.

AN ACTION TO TAKE: Do you take time reading Scripture every day? Try setting 15 minutes aside daily to read the Bible.

A PRAYER TO MAKE: ‘Lord, may I read the Word of God in Scripture and meditate on it day and night, and be careful to do everything written in it. Amen’ (cf Josh. 1:8).
