New Start

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son. John 3:9

Like Nicodemus, everyone is searching to satisfy an inner angst. So much is demanded of us from life that it’s easy to lose touch with the ‘real me’ within. The popular TV programme Escape Down Under tells of families seeking a better life. They assume sun and sea offer them this opportunity. Yet, half return within a few years.

I once lived in Milton Keynes. Then a new city, it attracted many seeking ‘a new start’. Once, I took a desperate phone call in the middle of the night from someone considering suicide. Their darkest fears were stalking them. Like Nicodemus, deeply disturbed, they urgently needed help.

Our lives are fragile, and short lived. Scripture describes them as like the grass and flowers that blossom for a brief summer before dying in the autumn. Beware of pushing anxiety into the future and refusing to face it head on. Like Nicodemus we may not find complete answers but we can fall in step alongside Jesus, who knows us and offers us hope in place of despair.

One reason I’m at Waverley Abbey is because it offers hope through Scripture, prayer, counselling and learning. It is a resource centre for all those with unresolved questions. It offers practical encouragement and support on-site and online.

When born again, we require support on our journey, for not one of us is an island. Waverley Abbey offers a vibrant community – both actual and virtual. We are here to welcome every Nicodemus in search of answers. Knowing where to turn is the first step in finding our way forward.

Something to Consider: Who do you have to encourage you in your walk of faith?

An Action to Take: Identify one practical resource that will support you in your Christian life.

A Prayer to Make: ‘Lord, I know I cannot make it on my own. Help me build strong connections within the Christian community.’
