‘It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.’ (vv8–9) Psalm 118:5–14

It’s difficult separating news from views. Every piece of personal news analysis carries within it ‘unrealised persuaders’. These are the result of our culture, upbringing and inherent prejudices, amongst other factors. What appears objective has already been through our inbuilt bias filters.

Growing up, I was taught always to trust a policeman! Now we hear an increasing number of troubling stories that challenge this advice. Even this statement will provoke a reaction based upon our ‘hidden persuaders’. As the disciples of Jesus, we must first decide to place complete confidence in God, and then see fellow humans as image-bearers of our God.

Scripture clearly tells us that the human heart is desperately wicked (Jer. 17:9) but we are told by God to view everyone as made in God’s image and so everyone is invited to find salvation and redemption in Him. Remember the thief crucified alongside Jesus? (Luke 23:39–43)

God was prepared to offer me a refuge, and whatever my critics know, I will always know far more about my darker side than they can ever fathom. God also knows what I know, and more, yet chooses to forgive and love me – you too if you turn to God. Surrendering my preconceptions and choosing to live by God’s Word will prove challenging on a daily basis.

RELATED SCRIPTURE TO CONSIDER: Prov. 4:20–27; Jer. 17:7–10; John 2:23–25; Rev 3:14–22.

AN ACTION TO TAKE: Are there obstacles that prevent you from taking refuge in God and embracing God’s Word as completely reliable?

A PRAYER TO MAKE: ‘Lord, guide me through the many news stories I’m bombarded with and help me to view them through the truth of Your Word. Amen.’
