‘for which [the gospel] I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.’ (v20) Ephesians 6:18–20
In surrendering to Christ, we discover there are no limits beyond which God refuses to lead us. Scripture says that wherever we find ourselves, it is for the proclamation of the gospel; perhaps with few words and by our physical testimony to faithfulness.
Just as the Bible tells us that the leopard can’t change its spots, so we are encouraged to remain devoted and dependable in all circumstances (Jer. 13:23). Of course, Scripture states that God will not test us beyond what we can endure, yet in advance of any trial we don’t know where that point might be (1 Cor. 10:13).
Paul remains God’s ambassador, albeit in chains. These are the physical chains that hold him captive. Yet, we must wrestle with many invisible chains that can equally restrict our freedom. Our temptation is always to yield to pressure, for the immediate relief that follows feels comforting, however short-lived.
Such surrender may leave our Christian confession compromised. Whilst there’s always a way back through repentance, there will be consequences that can weaken our witness in the eyes of others. This is why Paul reminds us to pray all the time, whilst keeping our eyes open for possible compromises before they overtake us. As we pray for ourselves, let’s also pray for each other, for we are on this journey together, never alone.

AN ACTION TO TAKE: Fear is often a far larger barrier than the thing that gives rise to fear. Scripture says many times, ‘fear not’. Talk through your fears with God and determine the limits you might have in following Jesus.
A PRAYER TO MAKE: ‘Lord, help me to own and then entrust my deepest fears to You, knowing You promise to always accompany me. Amen.’
